Boys Hostel Dinajpur

A large number of indigenous people live in the northern districts of Bangladesh (Dinajpur, Rangpur, Rajshahi) who face socio-economic and educational disadvantages, as they belong to an ethnic or religious minority. Many people in those areas are illiterate, and have no proper access to education or schooling facilities.

To bring a positive change, the Baptist Mission Boy's Hostel was established and has been operated by SHED Board under Dinajpur Ancholic Baptist Church Shanga (ABCS), to provide an education for boys with socio-economic (due to their Christian faith) and ethnic disadvantages.

At the hostel the boys are provided with food, clothes, medical support and education facilities. All boys go to William Carey Memorial School (CMS), before going on to a colleges or to vocational training.
Besides school education from an early age on, the boys are given the opportunity to learn more about the investment in income generating programs and other hands-on activities.

The hostel supports development in

Education
Boys are given the chance of education in a safe environment and no responsibility to contribute to their family´s financial needs from an early age.

Social And Moral Values
Boys are supported in their spiritual growth. The children are given the chance to attend Christian faith-based programs (such as annual youth and church conferences, Sunday school programs, weekly church services, morning and evening devotion, celebrating Christian holidays, etc.). Through a holistic child development approach staff members support the social, emotional and spiritual growth of the boys.

Leadership Skills
Older boys have responsibilities in leading the younger boys as they are involved in housework, keeping the hostel environment clean, etc.

House Keeping/Domestic Care
The boys help out in the kitchen and dinning hall, as well as taking care of the domestic animals of the hostel (i.e. cows and calves). Through hand-on activities and workshops in income generating activities, the boys also learn more about financial management and savings.

Money Saving Strategies
Self-Help-Group (SHG) teaches the boys hands-on training how to save money. The individual saving profit from income generating activities can be withdrawn by each boy, at the end of their Secondary School Certificate (SSC). Many students are able to pay their admission fee at college with this savings.

Farming/Gardening/Tree Planting Skills
The boys plant vegetables throughout the year and harvest it (i.e. mango, lychee, jackfruit, star fruit, banana, papaya,…).

Culture And Customs
The boys remember the countr's history on national days (i.e. 21th of February: Mother Language day, 26th of March: Independence Day, 16th of December: Victory Day), celebrating traditions and customs together.

Growing relationships between parents/guardians and children
Regular parents meetings are held to keep relatives and guardians informed about Hostel related decisions, changes,…Also the boys get the chance to spend time with the parents and to present in a small program, what they have been learning.
Every year many parents want to submit their boys to the hostel. Boys are given the chance to regular schooling and proper education to lay a foundation for higher studies in the future. So, many boys hope to get a chance to stay at the Baptist Mission Boy's Hostel. Due to limited space as well as human and financial resources, it is impossible to meet the expectations of many parents, who are hoping each year to send their boys.

Girls Hostel Dinajpur

SHED Board has invested in education of children, especially focusing on girls from underprivileged socio-economic and ethnic background.

A nation can be educated through an educated mother.

Still, women in Bangladesh, especially the indigenous women, are not given much support when it comes to education and development. They have less opportunity to access education, to get a job, to be involved in decision making processes in their family, community, society.

Having seen that, SHED Board has started to fight for the girls' right to education, as they are those who take care of the next generation, growing up in their homes.  The urgent need for education in the North of Bangladesh, particularly for the indegineous people focusing on education for underprivileged, orphan girls from Dinajpur and Rangpur districts, has led to particular action to provide a chance for girls to education in the area.

SHED BOARD established the Girls’ hostel in Dinajpur in 1996. Since then, numbers of under privilege girls have been given the opportunity to stay at the hostel in order to attend school regularly and to finish their high school education.  Coming from poor and indigenous families many families still lack the ability to provide financially for the education of all their children.
The Baptist Girl´s hostel is the only Baptist hostel for the girls in the northern part of the country. With this come great opportunities and  responsibility to reach out to the girls and their families providing access to education for 'the future mothers' of the country.

Our goals are to
  • provide access to education for orphan and needy girls of indigenous communities
  • take action in providing a safe environment for them to live
  • encourage and support their spiritual, emotional, social and personal growth through a holistic child development approach
  • maintain hands-on teaching lessons to develop skills (in example: in house keeping, farming and other income generating activities/ vocational training programs)
  • ensure provision for their basic needs (food, housing, medical care, etc.)

The Girls' Hostel is a small community in which the children learn to develop social skills. Children learn to look after one another and to support each other. The older girls are encouraged to look after the younger girls, and to assist them in their studies, garden work and duties in the house, as well as preparing cultural programs and other activities throughout the year, together.
The Hostel girls go to William Cary Memorial High School (CMS) and to local Colleges or local vocational training centres (nursing training) in Dinajpur city, to receive higher education and to graduate with success, in hope of a better future being provided with education, social and professional skills.
To  be  witnesses  of  Jesus  Christ  through  words  and  actions,  by  sharing  God’s  love  with  people  of  all  faiths.
